How to autumn-proof your skincare routine in 5 steps

Autumn is always a bit of an odd season to adjust to, isn’t it?

The weather can’t make it’s mind up and choosing whether you need to wear tights, bring an umbrella or double up on the deodorant is a daily struggle! On top of that, the skincare routine that was serving you faithfully in summer just might not be cutting it anymore.

Don’t worry though, dryness, breakouts and a lacklustre complexion at this time of year are all totally normal. Let us walk you through the 5 simple switch-ups you can make in your routine to get your skin back to its best!

Opt for a hydrating cleanser

As the weather transitions from summer to autumn, it’s crucial to incorporate more hydration into your skincare routine. Lower temperatures and a drop in humidity levels mean that your complexion is likely to lose moisture thanks to the dry air it’s having to deal with.

For this reason, we recommend opting for a more hydrating cleanser. Oil-based ones like Neighbourhood Botanical’s Face Off or TRUE’s Organic Clarifying Safflower and Geranium Cleansing Oil are great options. Not only do they work hard to remove makeup and daily dirt, but they add an extra hit of moisture.

And hydrate some more

In the same vein, it’s also beneficial to choose a more impactful moisturiser or facial oil in the autumn period.

To beat the dry air, we recommend Codex Beauty’s Bia Day Cream, which is clinically proven to improve your skin’s hydration at a cellular level. That means a smoother and more supple complexion all day long. In the evenings, we also love Neighbourhood Botanicals’ Dream Dream Dream facial oil, with moringa seed oil, macadamia nut oil and apricot kernel oil to truly feed the skin.

Be prepared to fight spots

Any changes in humidity and temperature can lead to breakouts. That’s why you should try to add a clarifying mask into your weekly routine in autumn.

Don’t forget your SPF

Just because the sun is hiding behind a cloud (or looks non-existent!), doesn’t mean you should neglect your SPF! It’s important to protect the skin against  UVA and UVB rays all year round, not only to reduce your risk of skin cancer, but to help prevent premature signs of ageing.

Liberally apply a broad-spectrum SPF in the morning. We love Evolve’s Climate Veil Tinted one.

Look after your lips

As we said, moisturisation is the key as we transition into the colder weather. And that means everywhere!

Don’t skip the opportunity to add a hit of hydration to your lips. Perfect for chucking in your bag or keeping in your desk drawer, Balmkind’s Alpine Rose & Lysine Lip Balm is full to the brim with nourishing and natural ingredients. Your pout will be grateful, we promise!
